If you’ve seen ScyFy’s new Battlestar Galactica spinoff Caprica then you’re no doubt familiar with the infinity symbol for the “Soldiers of the One.”

I couldn’t help notice the similarity to the slightly asymmetrical blue-purple infinity logo new to Visual Studio 2010.

i was looking for the caprica infinity symbol and stumbled upon your post. i have to disagree. the symbol on caprica is interrupted, two dimensional, and isn’t actually asymmetrical– you’re seeing it in perspective. in other scenes the symbol is never asymmetrical. the only similarity is that they are both blue-purple infinity symbols. neither is exactly original.

On the other hand, I found your site because I immediately saw the similarity and was looking for the Caprica symbol so I could blog about the same thing!!

  3. Almost spooky isn’t it? Think our designers had any favorite shows?

Good catch. The symbol, called a mobius strip, is fairly ancient and is actually the inspiration for the infinity symbol. The curious figure exists in 3 dimensions but only has 1 continuous side and only 1 continuous edge. A 3D circle if you can imagine that. If you cut it in half lengthwise the result is one piece twice as long, rather than the usual two pieces half as long. It has been fascinating mathematicians for ages and is related to the klein bottle.
